JBI Localization to Partner with MediaMill on Switchable Multi-Language CD Projects
JBI Localization, Inc. and MediaMill, Inc. have entered into an agreement in which JBI, a prominent localization firm with expertise in creating international language versions of corporate, financial, entertainment, education and training audio-video and printed materials, will provide multiple-language translation and production services for MediaMill's unique switchable language optical disk projects, it was announced by JBI President Eliane Barth and MediaMill President Glen Phillips. ???Based in Vancouver, B.C., MediaMill specializes in "pocket media," providing audio-video or video with subtitled text on mini CDs, using proprietary technology that includes the company's own play-engine imbedded on each disc. ???Only three years old, the company has provided CD communications solutions to a variety of corporations, including automobile manufacturers, airlines and entertainment enterprises, targeting particularly international companies with multilingual audiences.???MediaMill's technology enables companies to deliver video content with voice or text script in multiple languages that are switchable on-the-fly at the click of a mouse, according to Phillips.???"This technology lends itself to fast and inexpensive distribution of audio-video information in multiple languages, which should be of interest across many types of activity" Barth said.
"Where normally a CD is generated for each localization market, MediaMill's approach enables a client to place a single version of the video on a disk and support it with any number of different languages on the same disk, each individually synched to the video.
The prospects are exciting because the range of applications is enormous ? from business training and marketing to education, arts and entertainment."???Phillips noted that a single 27 minute mini-CD might hold an eight-minute video along with several voice translations, or up to three such videos with superimposed subtitles and graphics.???"When using a localized, multi-language DVD using standard authoring technology, the viewer must go back and navigate the main menu to select a new language," he said. "With MediaMill's solution, you can change languages on the fly while maintaining perfect synchronization.???"In business applications, this can reduce the redundant costs of preparing different marketing and training materials for multiple world markets dramatically, using the same disc for multiple language markets ? a disc that weighs a third of an ounce and costing less than a dollar.
In training situations, the trainer can provide each attending employee with a take-along mini-CD that can be played at the desk, or taken for study on their home computer." ???Educational applications abound as well, Barth added, notably in areas where first- and second-language situations impact the learning process, whether for general studies or for foreign language training.
